Washington University in St. Louis is one of the best-preserved historic American university campuses in the Midwest of the United States. The community of students, faculty and staff is growing and the campus is being transformed under a plan developed by a multidisciplinary team including Schulze+Grassov.

With a dozen individual commissions since 2012, we have been a steady partner to Washington University from the development of a vision for campus transformation all the way to the implementation of $350m in constructed projects. We have designed a network of safe walking and bicycling paths on campus, contributed to the design of a new bridge connecting to campus, and we have been the lead designer for safety improvements to perimeter streets connecting the university with surrounding communities.

In 2013 we facilitated the most comprehensive mobility survey carried out at a private american university to date, allowing us to help the administration to understand and transform mobility culture on campus.

Using smart technology we tracked a 15.000 people strong community of students, faculty and staff for a month, using anonymised data generated by their movement behaviour, to understand better the choices made on a daily basis.

Connecting town and gown, the community drew a beautiful map for us, leaving behind digital traces of their daily commute to and from university, the places they visit on and off campus, and showing us the places they choose to linger for study, work or recreation.

This extensive data set allowed us to develop a nuanced understanding of freshmen behaviour and how this key user group was adopting or ignoring the safe paths constructed to allow them to walk between the South 40 residential area and the main Danforth campus.

To help older students, faculty and staff living off campus get safely to campus we co-designed a new bridge over a major parkway, making sure that this key northern gateway to campus can accommodate safely the large and rising number of pedestrians and cyclists.

A major milestone on the journey to become a carbon-neutral campus was the completion of the East End project where we developed the space programme for the outdoor spaces and designed the network of on-campus paths and intersections connecting to the surrounding streets.

Removing major surface parking lots was the key to unlocking big potential to implement ceremonial new spaces for special occasions as well as good outdoor spaces for taking breaks in and enjoying this wonderful campus landscape.

To help anchor our mobility guidance for the many planners and designers working across campus in the future, we were commissioned to draw up legibility design guidelines for campus paths for pedestrians and cyclists. The guidelines provided detailed specifications for path materiality and signage and markings.
