Using public life simulations and

VR-technology in public consultation to make design accessible for citizens

Frederiksberg is the green heart in the City of Copenhagen. Next to the Frederiksberg City Hall is a surface car park which hosts a popular flea market on weekends during the summer. The city leadership is gauging public commitment to creating a modern, diverse, and inviting new public space as a year-round destination.

We safely facilitated public participation during COVID-19 with a virtual platform that engaged citizens in a new and innovative way. Drawing on computer-game technology, we designed virtual reality models of several potential futures for the transformed square. The immersive virtual worlds were accessible at a socially-distanced, pop-up on location and via 360-degree movies on social media to allow people to engage in the public debate from home. The possibilities were animated further with a summer programme of complimentary activities.
